Self Care First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first-aid kit can help you respond to common medical emergencies, illness or injuries. It is also a vital resource if you ever need to treat yourself at home. You can buy one from a local drug store, the American Red Cross or you can make your own. A variety of self care guides are available at your local bookstore. To make your own first-aid kit, the American College of Emergency Physicians recommends including the following items (available at your local drug store):

You can store these items in a tote bag, so that everything is in one place and you can take it with you when you travel. Make sure the appropriate people in your house know where the kit is and how to use each item.

First-aid manual or self-care guide (will help you know how and when to use the items in your kit)

Information:
Emergency phone numbers (family doctor, regional Poison Control, nurse advice line)

List of medications and allergies for family members

Bandages and injury/wound Supply:

Band-Aids (assorted sizes)

Bandages (assorted sizes, including a triangular bandage, elastic wraps)

Gauze pads and roller gauze (assorted sizes)

Antiseptic wipes/ointment

Scissors and tape (to secure bandages)

Cold packs

Tweezers (to remove splinters, ticks, etc.)

Medicines and supplies (use age-appropriate doses only):

Pain relievers (including aspirin tablets in case of heart attack)

Cold medicines (cough suppressants, decongestants)

Antihistamines

Activated charcoal and syrup of ipecac (use only if directed by Poison Control Center)

Other supplies:

Thermometers

Calamine lotion

Hydrocortisone cream
