Eat Healthy
Eating right is vital to promoting health and reducing the risk for death
or disability due to stroke, diabetes, heart disease or cancer. The USDA
has created a Food
Guide Pyramid a Guide to Daily Food Choices to
help you with your food choices.
Here are things to consider if you want to eat right:
Eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day — Fruits
and vegetables, as part of a healthy diet, help reduce the risk of heart
disease and various types of cancer. Make “five
a day” a part of your diet.
Watch
your weight—Being
overweight puts you at higher risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and
cancer.
Watch your food portions — Serving sizes have increased
significantly. For example, muffins that used to weigh 1.5 ounces in 1957,
are now five times bigger – averaging half a pound. Take the Portion
Distortion Interactive Quiz and find out how portions have grown over the years.
Watch your cholesterol — Elevated blood cholesterol
levels is one of the key risk factors for heart disease. At your next appointment,
ask you doctor when the last time your cholesterol was checked—you
may be due for another check soon.
